NaNoWriMo?

Hey guys!  I just wanted to quickly say that I'm contemplating doing National Novel Writing Month. (I can't find the short way to say it because I haven't done this before) I made an account on their a few years ago, but I wasn't a dedicated writer then. (Still so much to learn) But I know some of you guys do it so could you tell me more about it? Do you have to start a brand new novel or can it be an idea that you wrote a two chapters on and stopped? Thanks again!

Have you attempted or successfully completed NaNoWriMo? (I think that's how you say it) What are the pros and cons of it? If you have time, please comment and tell me what you think. I'm pretty sure there's time left:)

In Christ,
Sarah

  1. Hey! I did NaNo last year for the first time and completed it! I did do the "kid" version, and will be sticking to that version again this year. I prefer it because you can choose you're word count goal. You can get a mentor if you want.
It was super fun and it definitely grew me as a writer.
A con though, would be that it takes a ton of your time. You're basically taking away all social life. And you're majorly downsizing a lot of time on Pinterest and blogging and stuff like that.
But it's totally worth it. Unbelievably.
About the brand new idea or two chapter then stopped idea, as I understand it, you have to use a new idea. Or rewrite those two chapters. I have written a little bit of my idea, but plan on "rewriting" it. ;)
    Hope this helps! :)

  3. I've only done camp nanowrimo so far, but I loved it and I'm doing nanowrimo this year. I think the idea is to start a story you've never written before but you could get away with using one you've barely started. The rules aren't set in stone. The pros are you can talk to other writers as you go for help brainstorming and such, and there are lots of discussions and prompts. I love the word tracker that tells you how many words you need to write to be on schedule. The only con I can think of is that it takes a lot of time out of some people's lives trying to get the word count done, but I think that just depends on what you have to do and priorities. Have fun :)

    1. Okay, thanks! Yeah, I think I will rewrite the chapters anyway. I didn't know about the prompts. Thanks for the advice.

  4. I'm doing it for the first time this year! I would definitely recommend that you sign up though I do not have experience to draw from. You can start from any point in a novel but the idea is that you begin a brand new book and write the whole thing in a month.

  6. Sarah, I just found your blog and this post and I thought I might comment with my thoughts on this. =) I've done NaNoWriMo once before and Camp NaNo once as well, I've won both and I've got to say both of them we're the most awesome writing time I've gotten. You do have to start a new novel but I actually see why, because then you write the whole thing in 30 days and no body starts ahead of anyone else, everyones at the begining. I know I love it because it helps me to see it more like the reader will. =) The pro's are kinda obvias, you get a novel in 30 days, you get to vertually hang out with lots of other writers and I know it helped me to be more focased with my writing. =) Cons: 1. when you hit writiers block it can be very stressful because you 'have' to keep going. 2. your hands get soar from typing. 3. it takes a lot of time, which isn't nessasarly bad it just is. It took me about three hours each day to do it. =)
Well, I guess thats more information then you asked for. I hope it helps!

P.S. Oh and also I know all these people keep saying if you do NaNoWriMo you have no time for school, friends, breaks, meals, breathing or just life in general but while it takes up a few hours each day, my life doesn't stop for NaNo. ;)
